The next generation

in 2010-11 Elaine led an education project with 70 young string players, organised by BMS in partnership with the City of Belfast School of Music. Workshops were held on Saturday mornings as part of the CBSM Junior String Orchestra rehearsals. A final concert, including a new piece for the Orchestra by Elaine, took place on Saturday 19 February as part of the International Festival.

Making a difference

On Saturday 15 January 2011 Elaine led a creative music workshop with children at the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children's Narnia residential centre in Newcastle. Funded by an award from the Arts & Business Reach Investment programme, the workshop was one of several that Elaine led during the year for BMS, helping to bring creative music making into the community. Staff from Barclays Wealth, BMS's headline sponsor, participated in the workshops too. After the Narnia workshop, they commented: 'As a team building exercise, the creative workshop was an exciting and memorable experience and definitely one worth repeating. Altogether, the session allowed us to unlock our inhibitions, share in fun and laughter through participation and really unwind from the stresses and strain of a busy working day. In sum, what a great way to unlock the inner child and especially when you take it one step further and directly engage with the young children both at the deaf school and NICFC who we chose to dedicate these workshops to; a truly fantastic experience all-round.' A further workshop took place at Cregagh Primary School's deaf unit, along with staff from the Barclays Wealth team and Brona Whittaker, Arts Manager from Arts & Business.

During 2011/12 Elaine will be delivering more creative music workshops for BMS, this time through a partnership with the Radisson Blu and Park Inn hotels in Belfast and a new award from the Arts & Business Investment programme. She will lead a series of workshops for residents of Clifton House nursing home, as well as introductory workshops for staff and clients of the two hotels.
