On 12 January, the Belfast News-Letter noted that ‘Howard Ferguson the composer and pianist, is coming from Lon¬don to play, with the Griller String Quartet, at a concert arranged by the Northern Ireland branch of the British Music Society on Saturday. Born in the Malone Road district of Belfast some 30 years ago Mr. Ferguson was a youthful competitor at the music festivals held in the city. Harold Samuel, the famous pianist, heard his playing and persuaded him to go to London, where he has since made a reputation, particularly as a composer. … Recently Mr. Ferguson was released from service in the RAF so that he might devote his full time to music and assist Dame Myra Hess to arrange the mid-day recitals now being given at the National Gallery, London, a project in which her Majesty the Queen takes a particular interest.’
